Draped Bust Type Small Eagle Reverse 1796
Draped Bust Type Heraldic Eagle Reverse 1804-1807

AG3 – Details clear enough to identify.

G4 – Date readable. Bust outlined, but no detail.

VG8 – All but deepest drapery folds worn smooth. Hairlines nearly gone and curls lack detail.

F12 – All drapery lines visible. Hair partly worn.

VF20 – Only left side of drapery is indistinct.

EF40 – Hair well outlined and detailed.

AU50 – Slight trace of wear on shoulder and highest waves of hair.

MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.

Capped Bust Type 1815-1838
Variety 1 Large Size 1815-1828

AG3 – Details clear enough to identify.

G4 – Date, letters, and stars readable. Hair under headband smooth. Cap lines worn smooth.

VG8 – Rim well defined. Main details visible. Full LIBERTY on cap. Hair above eye nearlysmooth.

F12 – All hairlines show but drapery has only part details. Shoulder clasp distinct.

VF20 – All details show, but some wear. Clasp and ear sharp.

EF40 – All details show distinctly. Hair well outlined.

AU50 – Slight trace of wear on tips of curls and above the eye, and on the wing and claw tips.

MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

Capped Bust Type 1815-1838
Variety 2 – Reduced Size No Motto On Reverse 1831-1838

G4 – Bust well defined. Hair under head band smooth. Date, letters, stars readable. Scant rims.

VG8 – Details apparent but worn on high spots. Rims strong. Full LIBERTY.

F12 – All hairlines visible. Drapery partly worn. Shoulder clasp distinct.

VF20 – Only top spots worn. Clasp sharp. Ear distinct.

EF40 – Hair details and clasp are bold and clear.

AU50 – Slight trace of wear on hair around the forehead and on the cheek and at the top and bottom tips of eagle’s wings and left claw.

MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

Liberty Seated Type 1838-1891

G4 – Scant rim. LIBERTY on shield worn off. Date and letters readable.

VG8 – Rim fairly defined, at least three letters in LIBERTY evident.

F12 – LIBERTY complete, but partly weak.

VF20 – LIBERTY strong.

EF40 – Complete LIBERTY and edges of scroll. Clasp shows plainly.

AU50 – Slight wear on Liberty’s knees and breast and on the neck, wing tips, and claws.

MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.

Barber or Liberty Head Type 1892-1916

G4 – Date and legends readable. LIBERTY worn off headband.

VG8 – Minimum of three letters in LIBERTY readable.

F12 – LIBERTY completely readable but not sharp.

VF20 – All letters in LIBERTY plainly even.

EF40 – LIBERTY bold, and its ribbon distinct.

AU50 – Slight trace of wear above forehead, on the cheek and on the eagle’s head, wings, and tail.

MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.

PF63 – Reflective surfaces with only a few blemishes in secondary focal places. No major flaws.

Standing Liberty Type 1916-1930

G4 – Date and lettering readable. Top of date worn. Liberty’s right leg and toes worn off. Left leg and drapery lines show much wear.

VG8 – Distinct date. Toes show faintly. Drapery lines visible above her left leg.

F12 – High curve of right leg flat from thigh to ankle. Left leg shows only slight wear. Drapery lines over right thigh can be seen only at sides of leg.

VF20 – Garment line across right leg will be worn but show at sides.

EF40 – Flattened only at high spots. Her toes are sharp. Drapery lines across right leg are evident.

AU50 – Slight trace of wear on head, knee cap, shield’s center, and the highest pointon the eagle’s body.

MS60 – No trace of wear but can have many contact marks. Surface may be spotted, or luster faded.

MS63 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes. Attractive mint luster.

Washington Type 1932-1998

VG8 – Wing tips outlined. Rims are fine and even. Tops of letters at rim are flattened.

F12 – Hairlines about ear are visible. Tiny feathers on eagle’s breast are faintly visible.

VF20 – Most hair details show. Wing feathers are clear.

EF40 – Hairlines sharp. Wear spots confined to top of eagle’s legs and center of breast.

MS60 – No trace of wear but can have many contact marks. Surface may be spotted, or luster faded.

MS63 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes. Attractive mint luster.

MS64 – Shows a few scattered contact marks. Good eye appeal and attractive luster.

MS65 – Only light scattered contact marks that are not distracting. Strong luster, good eye appeal.

PF65 – Hardly any blemishes and no flaws.
