Flowing Hair Type 1794-1795
AG3 – Clear enough to identify.
G4 – Date and letters sufficient to be readable. Main devices outlined, but lack details.
VG8 – Major details discernible. Letters well formed but worn.
F12 – Hair ends distinguishable. Top hairlines show, but otherwise worn smooth.
VF20 – Hair in center shows some detail. Other details more bold.
EF40 – Hair above head and down neck detailed, with slight wear.
AU50 – All hair shows with slight wear on the bust and top edges of eagle’s wings,head, and breast.
Draped Bust Type Small Eagle Reverse 1796-1797

AG3 – Clear enough to identify.
G4 – Date and letters sufficient to be readable. Main devices outlined, but lack details.
VG8 – Major details discernible. Letters well formed but worn.
F12 – Hair ends distinguishable. Top hairlines show, but otherwise worn smooth.
VF20 – Right side of drapery slightly worn. Left side to curls is smooth.
EF40 – All lines in drapery on bust will show distinctly around to hair curls.
AU50 – Slight trace of wear on cheek, hair, and shoulder.
Capped Bust Type Lettered Edge 1807-1836
G4 – Date and letters readable. Bust worn smooth with outline distinct.
VG8 – LIBERTY visible but faint. Legends distinguishable. Clasp at shoulder visible. Curl aboveit nearly smooth.
F12 – Clasp and adjacent curl clearly outlined with slight details.
VF20 – Clasp at shoulder clear. Curl has wear on highest point. Hair over brow distinguishable.
EF40 – Clasp and adjacent curl fairly sharp. Brow and hair above distinct. Curls welldefined.
AU50 – Trace of wear on hair over eye, and over ear.
MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes. May have slide marks from storage handling.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.
Capped Bust Type Reeded Edge “50 Cents” 1836-1837
Capped Bust Type Reeded Edge “Half Dol.” 1838-1839
G4 – LIBERTY discernible on head band.
VG8 – Minimum of three letters in LIBERTY must be clear.
F12 – LIBERTY complete.
VF20 – LIBERTY is sharp. Shoulder clasp is clear.
EF40 – LIBERTY sharp and strong. Hair details show.
AU50 – Slight trace of wear on cap, cheek, and hair above the forehead, claws, wing tops, and the head.
MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.
Liberty Seated Type 1839-1891
G4 – Scant rim. LIBERTY on shield worn off. Date and letters readable.
VG8 – Rim fairly defined, at least three letters in LIBERTY are evident.
F12 – LIBERTY complete, but weak.
VF20 – LIBERTY mostly sharp.
EF40 – LIBERTY entirely sharp. Scroll edges and clasp distinct.
AU50 – Slight trace of wear on Liberty’s breast and knees, head, claws, and wing topsof eagle.
MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.
Barber or Liberty Head Type 1892-1915
G4 – Date and legends readable. LIBERTY worn off headband.
VG8 – Minimum of three letters readable in LIBERTY.
F12 – LIBERTY completely readable but not sharp.
VF20 – All letters in LIBERTY evenly plain.
EF40 – LIBERTY bold, and its ribbon distinct.
AU50 – Slight trace of wear above forehead, leaf tips, and cheek. Also on the head,tail and wing tips of the eagle.
MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Lustermay be impaired.
PF63 – Reflective surfaces with only a few blemishes in secondary focal places. No major flaws.
Liberty Walking Type 1916-1947
G4 – Rims are defined. Motto IN GOD WE TRUST readable.
VG8 – Motto is distinct. About half of shirt lines at left are clear.
F12 – All skirt lines evident, but worn in spots. Details in sandal below motto are clear.
VF20 – Skirt lines sharp including leg area. Little wear on breast and right arm.
EF40 – All skirt lines bold.
AU50 – Slight trace of wear on head, knee and breast tips also on the claws and head.
MS60 – No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.
MS65 – No trace of wear. Barely noticeable blemishes.
PF65 – Choice Brilliant surfaces with no noticeable blemishes or flaws. May have a few scattered barelynoticeable marks or hairlines.
Franklin-Liberty Bell Type 1948-1963
VF20 – At least half of the lower and upper incused lines on the rim of the bell must show.
EF40 – Wear spots appear at top of end curls and hair back of ears. On reverse, LibertyBell will show wear at top and on lettering.
MS63 – Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster maybe impaired.
MS65 – Only light scattered contact marks that are not distracting. Strong luster,good eye appeal.
PF65 – Choice Brilliant surfaces with no noticeable blemishes or flaws. May have a few scattered barelynoticeable marks or hairlines.
Kennedy Type 1964-Date
