One of the United States Mint’s authorized purchasers (CNT) finally put its 2010 America the Beautiful 5 oz silver coins on sale today (March 8, 2011). A buyer was required to call a toll free number between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. [EST] in order to purchase the coins. My buddy and I called the number for the complete 2 hour period. We were on separate telephone lines and averaged about 6 calls per minute with redial buttons. This amounts to 4 man hours of calling and a total of 1440 telephone calls. We never got through.
This is the process the United States Mint has allowed for the distribution these coins. These authorized purchasers are under the auspices of the Mint. This is a ridiculous process and a prime example of the inefficiency of the United States government. Who ever devised this process should lose their job (and let’s not forget our congressmen). And to think, the government is now in control of healthcare – if that does not scare you, then you don’t have a brain.

I am curious about that myself. I looked through the completed auctions and I saw unopened boxes from the APs. It's my understanding that these came shipped similar to how the Silver American Eagles are in tubes, not individually 5 coin sets. If you find out otherwise let me know. I can see the perception of the APs potentially filtering out the better quality ones for familiar customers/friends/etc. The only resolve for this would be for the Mint to sell them directly from their site rather than middlemen, just like they do every other product except bullion coins. Granted these are supposed to be 5 oz silver bullion coins but their mintage make them much more than that, you simply can't compare a 2010 Silver American Eagle to these 5 oz America the Beautiful Silver quarter set.

I noticed one seller from Springfield, IL has 25 sets on auction, oddly enough that's the same city Gold Center is located. It killed me to see the photo of the people standing outside waiting to buy them. I agree that method is not fair to the American public. Let's hope the remaining one's that have not sold theirs yet make them available so it's fair and not who can get 50 employees to stand in line at the door steps.

The APs are too slow getting these out to the public, and are asking everyone to respect their requests not to call about the ATBs because they are not selling yet. Why is everyone respecting their requests when they show no respect for the public. I wonder if their would quit delaying if everyone kept their business lines busy with calls all day asking them about it. All this delay is allowing proof out that they are selling them out their back door, and giving them plenty of time to cherry pick the very best ones, leaving the worst sets to the public, if they even do that!
Why are there people on eBay with pictures of their unopened boxes from those dealers that say they are not selling?
AMark and Fidelitrade did a superb job of quickly getting their allotments sold to the general public in a fair manner, and did not just sell them to walk-in customers. I hope that everyone buying bullion in the future buys from them.
As for those dealers playing games with their allotments, please, please, please give them all of your respect, and please, please don't keep their phones all tied up calling them asking them when they will respect our wishes and put them up for sale quickly and in a fair manner.

From what I have seen, the authorized distributors are holding onto the coins (5 oz. silver) and not responding to inquiries -- waiting on prices to rise or figuring out how to charge the highest price while still remaining in compliance with the new guidelines? I thought distributors were supposed to distribute. As usual with anything related to the Mint, it is the citizens that pay through the nose.

I saw the Home Shopping Network offering them for $5,000 a set yesterday evening (January 5th). They said they had 210 sets. This system is working out great for the middle men.

I called the Mint and was told to call (202) 354-7500 if I had a complaint. I was told this was the office in charge of bullion coins. There was a recording, but you can leave a message.
